The Chilojo Cliffs are Gonarezhou National Park’s most dramatic landmark - towering walls of red sandstone rising 180 meters above the Runde River. These spectacular formations glow orange-red in the afternoon sun, creating one of southern Africa’s most unforgettable vistas.
The name comes from the Shangaan language. The cliffs are a landmark feature visible from great distances, guiding travelers through this remote wilderness.
The Chilojo Cliffs have been called “Africa’s Grand Canyon” - perhaps an exaggeration, but the scale and color of these formations create genuine drama. With elephants wandering below and the sun turning the sandstone to fire, it’s quintessential African wilderness scenery.
